blog about professional services family database contact discovering roots in the scottish borders posted on 1 st june 2016 my collingwood line has always been one of my most interesting, and i’ve been trying hard for a number of years to trace it back as far as i can. i know quite a lot about my 5x-great-grandfather dr thomas collingwood but his ancestors are still fairly myserious. i have known for many years that dr thomas collingwood’s father was named robert. i had found thomas’ baptism record that showed he was baptised at mordington in berwickshire, scotland (quite literally just across the border from northumberland) and that his parents were named robert collingwood and janet martin. his obituary mentioned that his mother was called elizabeth martin, but everything else on the baptism record matched, so i think this was just a mistake in the obituary. the baptism showed that robert farmed at “high cocklaw”, a farm i have since tracked down to be on the english/scottish border less than half a mile from mordington. his obituary said he was born at bates cross; this could be another name for the same farm, another mistake or perhaps a name for the crossroads near high cocklaw. due to a number of records from the northumberland archives, i was sent by a researcher looking into the collingwood family, i had previously believed this robert to be born in 1725, the son of alexander collingwood of little ryle. using these same records, it was fairly easy to trace this collingwood line back to the early 15th century. robert collingwood and janet martin’s gravestone in ayton churchyard however, last year i got into contact with a distant collingwood cousin whose father had researched their collingwood ancestry in the 1950s. she provided some information that was new to me, the most interesting of which being that dr thomas collingwood’s parents were buried in the village of ayton, in berwickshire in scotland. she had a photo of the grave and the inscription revealed that robert died in 1788 aged 87, meaning he was born in 1700 or 1701 – definitely not in 1725. it also revealed that robert’s wife janet died in 1768 aged 44, meaning she was born in 1723 or 1724. on top of that, on the reverse of the gravestone was inscriptions relating to other burials of robert and janet’s children and their respective families. i was able to match up these names with scottish baptism records to confirm the names of four of his siblings – all girls. this matched up with his obituary that states he had 5 sisters (one of whom is evidently yet to be found). read full post no comments further developments on the smiths in ainstable posted on 23 rd march 2015 research in to my smith ancestors from the village of ainstable in cumbria has been particularly fruitful in the last few months; six months ago i knew nothing beyond my 4th great-grandfather henry smith. i knew he was an auctioneer, innkeeper and yeoman in the small cumbrian village of ainstable in the early-to-mid 19th century, but as he was born in london, i didn’t really expect to find much on his predecessors with a surname of smith! that all changed when i received an email from a distant cousin in new zealand . with her help, and by looking over some previously dismissed records, i discovered the identiy of henry’s parents joseph and elizabeth, and his siblings horatio, harriet and elizabeth. i also got in touch with the current owner of my ancestor’s home, beckside, in the village of ainstable. he informed me that there was a date stone in the house that read “rowland and mary smith, 1704”. this name was familiar to me as henry smith and his wife agnes had had a son called rowland (who sadly drowned at the age of 16), and their daughter ann also named her own son rowland. it makes sense that the young rowland smith was named after his ancestor who built the family home of beckside, and he in turn was the namesake of his nephew. i now had to find the link between henry’s father joseph and their ancestor rowland smith. i had one clue for the missing link; a reference to a record i found on the cumbria archives website; a “memorandum of agreement on exchange of land” dated 1760. this record mentioned a john smith of beckside, ainstable. i had previously found a death duty register record for joseph smith dated 1826, but this doesn’t not prove that he died in that year (only that he had died previously and his executors had to pay inheritance tax). this record does state joseph’s age at death, so i cannot calculate when he was born. at this point, i believed to get any further with my research, i would have to view the ainstable parish records themselves to find out when joseph was born, or find his gravestone at the churchyard. either way, that would mean making a trip up the cumbria. read full post 2 comments the curious case of mary collingwood posted on 30 th january 2015 mary collingwood was my great-great-great-aunt, the sister of my great-great-grandmother agnes eliza phoebe collingwood. technically, she was only her half-sister, as agnes and mary’s mother eliza was widowed in 1853 – 13 years before mary was born. i do not know – and likely never will – who mary’s father was. eliza also had another illegitimate child, harry, the year after mary was born. mary was in all likeliness born at beckside, the family home, in ainstable in cumberland. beckside was built by eliza’s paternal ancestors rowland and mary smith in 1704 and had been in the family ever since. mary was baptised on 28th october 1866 at st michael’s church in ainstable. throughout the available uk censuses, mary lived in ainstable. most of the time this was at beckside, apart from in 1881 when the house was occupied by her great-aunt elizabeth watson and her husband. mary lived with her maternal grandmother agnes smith (nee atkinson) as a child, then with her mother until she passed away. during this time, her later sister agnes’ children were also living with mary and eliza. mary originally worked as a farmer, but took over the role of village postmistress from her mother. read full post no comments the search for earlier generations of smiths in ainstable posted on 8 th october 2014 recently i made some discoveries about the french huguenot ancestors of my 4x great-grandfather henry rochat smith (although his middle name was previously unknown to me!) through his mother elizabeth ann rochat. although henry was born in london, i know that his father’s family had roots in the village of ainstable in cumberland at least a couple of generations further back. henry and his family moved back to ainstable when he was around 10 years old and his youngest sister elizabeth sarah was born there in 1815. in a newspaper article from the carlisle journal on 27th february 1857 , henry is called as a witness in a murder case, where a thomas simpson was killed in ainstable. his part is relatively small, and i believe he is confirming that an area of land known as eden banks was part of the “nunnery estate”. this evidently had relevance in the murder case. henry mentions that he knew a man, jacob smith, who having lived in ainstable for 10 to 15 years, and who had knowledge of the area. henry had often heard jacob confirm where eden banks was. this man was henry’s great-uncle (his father’s uncle), and he died at the age of 81. henry smith mentioning his great-uncle jacob smith in the carlisle journal, 1857. i do not know when jacob died, nor where he died, so i cannot find when he was born. there are no baptism records online for a jacob smith in ainstable, nor in all of cumberland. i do not even know the name of henry’s father joseph’s father, but i suspect it may be john, who would be a brother of jacob. joseph died in 1823, but i do not know at what age. i need to visit ainstable and the carlisle archives to view the parish registers for the church, and hopefully find joseph’s burial record that will confirm his age at death, and therefore his approximate
